Learning Objectives

Hospital for Special Surgery Continuing Education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety.
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Perform a thorough evidence-based examination for CMT and plagiocephaly.
  • Identify red flags for differential diagnosis during an examination of an infant with CMT and plagiocephaly.
  • Incorporate into practice appropriate techniques in the treatment of children with CMT and plagiocephaly.
  • Utilize principles of treatment progression and discharge criteria for children with CMT and plagiocephaly.
  • Select appropriate treatment progressions for children requiring CMT surgery.
  • Discuss the importance of caregiver education and adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of caregivers to improve treatment outcomes.

Continuing Education Course Details

Livestreamed course: September 19-20, 2025 

There are no pre-course required readings or modules for the CEU-only livestreamed course. 

Post-course knowledge assessment: to be completed after September 22, 2025 

Credit for course participation is awarded after the completion of a 10 question post-course knowledge assessment (80% passing score, with unlimited attempts allowed) and program evaluation, available starting on September 22, 2025.


Requirements for Advanced Congenital Muscular Torticollis Certification

The following course components outline the requirements for certification:

  1. Foundational article review and pre-course knowledge assessment to be completed by September 17, 2025
    1. By August 8, participants will be provided with required articles and on demand module to be reviewed before the livestreamed course.
    2. A 10-question pre-course knowledge assessment must be completed by September 17, 2025 to gain access to the livestreaming content. A passing score of 80% will be required, with multiple attempts allowed.
  2. Livestreamed course: September 19-20, 2025
    1. Participation during this live course is required.
  3. Post-course knowledge assessment to be completed between September 22 - October 27, 2025.
    1. Continuing education credit for course participation is awarded after the completion of a 25-question post-course knowledge assessment (80% passing score, with unlimited attempts allowed) and program evaluation, available starting on September 22, 2025.
    2. To be eligible to move on to the last component of the Certification, a participant must earn a passing score of 80% within two attempts by October 27, 2025. If 80% is not earned within two attempts, a participant will NOT qualify for Certification. 
  4. Post-Course Video Skills Assessment, if eligible, must be completed before December 15, 2025.
    1. For the participant to proceed to the Post-Course Video Skills Assessment, a passing score of 80% within two attempts in the post course knowledge assessment must be achieved.
    2. Participants must demonstrate physical examination skills on an infant with or without CMT.
    3. Required consent forms should be printed, filled out/signed and uploaded. Blank forms will be available for download on HSS eAcademy.
      1. Document 1: A signed parental consent for recording the techniques.
      2. Document 2: A signed agreement by the clinician and a signed business associate agreement (BAA) by the clinic owner.
    4. Three videos must be uploaded; and should not exceed 6 minutes of total time for all three skills.
      1. Cervical range of motion measurements (right and left rotation and right and left lateral flexion)
      2. One cervical passive range of motion stretching technique
      3. One age-appropriate developmental treatment technique (ie for symmetrical development, cervical strengthening, mid-line orientation)
    5. If the reviewer is not able to view all portions of the skill, it will not be graded.
    6. Rating of the skills will be based on a scorecard that includes the components listed below:
      1. Therapist hand placement
      2. Baby positioning
      3. Appropriate tools used and placement for measurement 
      4. Stretching technique 
      5. Therapist interaction
    7. Video must be in MP4 format. If you are using an Apple device, please ensure the correct settings are in place to ensure your video is recorded in the appropriate format. 
    8. To ensure your recording meets the file size limit, please set resolution no higher than 1080p / 30 fps.  
    9. An infant information sheet must be completed and uploaded. The form can be printed, filled out / signed and uploaded. 
    10. A passing score of 80% is required. 
    11. Notification of the practical examination score will be provided by January 31, 2026. 
    12. If the practical examination is not passed, the clinician will not have an option to re-take.
  5. Certification is valid from January 2026- December 2031.  

Accreditation and Credit Designation

Hospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education. This course is approved for a maximum of 15 hours.

This activity is pending approval in NJ for physical therapy credits.

This activity is provided by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Accredited Provider 2512063TX and meets continuing competence requirements for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant licensure renewal in Texas.
